A model that was announced and did not arrive
June brings three new models. The more interesting one is one that did not arrive: Gemini 3.5 Pro was announced in May for «next month» — and has still not appeared.
June 2026 kept up the rhythm. Three releases, documented by the manufacturers:
- 9 June 2026: Claude Fable 5 (Anthropic) becomes generally available.
- 26 June 2026: GPT-5.6 appears as a preview; it only became generally available on 9 July.
- 30 June 2026: Claude Sonnet 5 (Anthropic).
Shortly before that, on 28 May, Claude Opus 4.8 had already appeared — wrongly assigned to June in many summaries: Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.8 (28. Mai 2026).
The model that is missing
On 19 May 2026, Google presented Gemini 3.5 — and announced that the Pro variant would follow the next month. It has not come. On the Google DeepMind pages, Gemini 3.5 Pro still stands as «coming soon».
What appeared in May was only Gemini 3.5 Flash, the smaller and faster model in the series. After that came Gemini 3.6 Flash in July and Gemini 3.7 Flash in August — the Pro variant was skipped.
An announcement is not a release date. Three months later it still says «coming soon».
We mention this not to show Google up. We mention it because this review would have looked different without the checking: in the first version of our timeline, Gemini 3.5 Pro stood as a June release. That was never documented — it merely appeared in summaries that had copied from one another.
Why this is more than a footnote
Anyone basing technology decisions on announcements is planning with something that does not exist. That happens more often than you would think: a model is announced, discussed in the trade press, included in comparison tables — and twelve weeks later it is still not available.
The checking step is simple and takes ten minutes: call up the manufacturer's page and see whether the model is listed there as available. Not the announcement — the model overview.
